Activities

Whether your interest is bird watching, botany, sight seeing or trekking, the 30 miles of hiking trails at Mount Totumas Cloud Forest and adjacent La Amistad NP provide you with many options. The trails are designed with wildlife viewing in mind as they pass through a mosaic of habitats from open pastures to virgin cloud forest and span an elevation range from 1500m to 2800m. Trekkers looking for challenging destinations can hike to the peak of Mount Totumas at 2624m, or explore the upper regions of the Rio Colorado valley in La Amistad NP. At any time of day a few minutes from your doorstep there are opportunities to find a private spot and absorb the magic of this untouched remote location. Mount Totumas Trails

Visitors to the Reserve should be prepared for an isolated wilderness "retreat" experience. The site and home are at the top of a valley bordering an immense national park. If you have spent time in the cloud forests of Costa Rica, think of this as having Monteverde all to yourself. There are no stores or villages. Just pristine wilderness.

We provide guides to take you to the most productive spots for birding and wildlife viewing. Visitors have the option to explore the site on their own, following marked trails.

At 2000 meters above sea level, Mount Totumas Cloud Forest has an invigorating climate with average daily temperatures ranging from the lower 60’s to the mid 80’s. Still warm enough to plunge into a waterfall at mid-afternoon but cool enough to remain comfortable even on strenuous vertical ascents.

At the end of an adventurous day in the surrounding wilderness our home is a welcome cozy retreat with all the essential amenities plus a small natural history library, internet access, games and movies.

Activities do not end when the sun goes down. When weather conditions permit, we set up bug lights for guests to marvel at the stunning diversity of our nocturnal lepidopteran visitors.

Off the main road and within walking distance from the homestead (2km) is the Los Pozos Hotsprings. With a constant temperature of 102F these springs are great for soaking. They are located right by a forest stream so visitors enjoy jumping from the hotsprings to the stream after a long hike. The surrounding 2nd growth forest and the riparian zone offer good habitats for birding and butterfly collecting / observation.
