Activities and Goals
Our mission for Mount Totumas Cloud Forest Reserve is to preserve the land as a wilderness, with the following objectives.
This page is in revision.

We have identified three objectives to support our vision: Research, Restoration, and Self Sufficiency. The first objective is to provide a field station to be used for education and research organizations and for ecotourism. Expanding on the existing home, classrooms, laboratories and housing will be of low impact construction and modest in design. Our second objective is restoration of pasture lands with the ultimate goal being an ecologically intact cloud forest. Using the virgin and secondary forests as reference and source material, we will design scientifically sound research to optimize restoration. Our third objective is to make the project self-sustaining. Due to the remoteness of the site, small scale organic agriculture will be developed for use by residents and for educational purposes.

Since the Reserve borders La Amistad National Park, it has excellent potential for the development of eco-tourism. The cloud forest habitats of western Panama and neighboring Costa Rica are rich in endemic species. The site provides a great potential for studies of the local biodiversity, birdwatching, orchid photography and other related areas of natural history interest.
The reserve was acquired in 2008. On the site is a three bedroom home with off-the-grid electricity. We are at the beginning of the planning phase and welcoming volunteers who would like to help us in our plans to add a sustainable infrastructure. Please contact us if you interested and we can let you know what projects are foreseen.

Visitors to the Reserve should be prepared for an isolated wilderness "retreat" experience. The site and home is at the top of a valley bordering an immense national park. If you have spent time in the cloud forests of Costa Rica, think of it as having Monteverde all to yourself. Individuals or groups interested in renting the home can contact us here
