The Home

The reserve currently has a modest three bedroom home on the site. This building will initially serve to house guests and provide temporary residence to volunteers and to research students who wish to conduct studies on the reserve and the surrounding national park. Universities and research institutes are invited to contact us if they are interested  in using these facilities for a modest fee. The home may also be rented to the public on request. To contact us please use the contact page.

Mount Totumas Cloud Forest Reserve is off the grid. However, thanks to the elevation and abundant water sources, the previous owners who farmed the site were able to install in 2004 a micro hydro electric plant. Seven hundred feet of 8-inch pipe taps the water from a perennial mountain stream that provides enough head pressure year round to generate up to 9 kilowatts of electricity. Currently this system is providing sufficient electricity with spare capacity for the existing home.
In 2009 we will be furnishing the home to provide guests with comfortable accommodations. Updates will be reflected here.
