Invitation to Research and Conservation Organizations

Mount Totumas Cloud Forest is reaching out to universities, research institutes and conservation societies interested in establishing student barracks and laboratories for education and both short and long term field studies. With immediate access to La Amistad National Park as well as the opportunities on site our location has a lot to offer. Off the grid power generation with our micro hydro generating plant provides renewable energy to power a laboratory and student housing in our remote location. Internet access is currently installed and operating with a microwave antenna.

           Vision

We envision an inter departmental and intra university approach to the research and housing infrastructure. Building construction can already represent an educational opportunity for environmental science and sustainability studies. The laboratory can be shared by different departments and research institutes in a cooperation that allows limited budgets to maximize the participation of student research.

   Opportunity: Biodiversity Studies

Mount Totumas Cloud Forest has montane forests in an uninterrupted corridor from 1650m up to the border of La Amistad National Park at 2000m. The national park directly bordering our site has old growth cloud forest and oak bamboo forests continuing on a vertical incline to 2634 meters. Three riparian areas are located on the property. The patchwork mosaic of pastures, second growth and old growth forests provide opportunities for diverse habitat studies.

       Program: Reforestation

We have already started allowing upper pastures bordering the park to reforest on their own since 2008 when the property was purchased. We plan to reforest up to an additional 100 acres and this will be initiated once we find conservation societies or research institutes interested in incorporating this reforestation into their educational curriculum or research. It is envisioned that this cooperation can contribute to the long term economic sustainability of the site to insure its future preservation for generations to come.
